There has been a noticeable shift in fashion choices that top NBA players have been sporting (no pun intended). Writer Wesley Morris calls it "the rise of the NBA Nerd", which can be seen on the likes of Dwyane Wade, LeBron James, Amar'e Stoudemire and Kevin Durant. Players are now opting for clothing like plaid button downs, bow-ties, khaki's, tailored suits and even eye-glasses! We are seeing far less of the oversized tee's and baggy jeans, or "urban attire".
One woman who is responsible for most of these wonderful transformations is stylist Rachel Johnson. Johnson's first NBA client was basketball superstar, Jalen Rose. Most recently, Miss Johnson's client Amar'e Stoudemire, was asked by Anna Wintour herself to sit front row at Tommy Hilfiger's show last September. As many of you know, Tommy Hilfiger embodies the All-American, preppy style, and Johnson dressed Stoudemire perfectly for the show: Khaki pants, plaid button down, and striped tie.
This shift, which I personally love, may be considered "nerdy" or "suburban", but it is completely fashion forward. We are seeing a rise in NBA star's becoming not just athletic inspirations, but fashion inspirations as well. Some are even in the works of collaborating with great fashion designers!
Next fall, Amar'e Stoudemire will be launching a clothing collection with fashion designer (and a personal favorite of mine) Rachel Roy, so make sure to look out for the collection coming soon! Also, for a more in depth discussion on this topic, make sure to read Wesley Morris' article.
